Asbestos
Asbestos
For years, asbestos was used in a wide range of building materials for its insulating qualities, its resistance to heat and chemicals and the strength it added to end products. Over time, however, asbestos has also been found to be a dangerous carcinogen that can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis and other serious respiratory conditions. It is found in:
Adhesives
Insulation
Tiles, Wallboard, Siding and Roofing
Asbestos-Cement Pipe and Sheet Material
Fireproofing/Acoustical Texture Products
Spackling, Patching and Taping Compounds
Vermiculite
Linoleum and Sheet Flooring

Vermiculite
For much of the 20th century, builders used vermiculite insulation, especially in attics and walls. Seventy percent of all vermiculite sold in the U.S. between 1919 and 1990 came from a mine close to Libby, Montana. The majority of vermiculite insulation, which was often marketed as Zonolite, was made from vermiculite sourced from this site. It has since been discovered that there was a deposit of asbestos in this mine as well, so vermiculite insulation is assumed to be contaminated with asbestos.
Not only can Big East Environmental help you determine if you have vermiculite insulation, we have experience with the Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust – a reimbursement program for insulation removal and re-insulation – and can help you through the process.
